“Seek out God’s Spirit Before Anything Else”

“Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

We need God’s Holy Sprit every moment of life, and that is the need we should pursue first and foremost. More so than physical hunger or thirst, seek out God’s Spirit, because His Spirit is the Spirit of Life.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

Matthew 5:6 (NIV)

“The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.”

John 6:63 (NIV)

Without God’s Spirit, we are not able to perceive the needs of ourselves and others. Although our physiological needs might be met_ hunger, thirst, etc., until we receive the Spirit of God, we lack discernment and fulfillment and therefore we are easily led astray by our desires.

“Don’t be a slave of your desires or live like people who don’t know God.”

1 Thessalonians 4:5 (CEV)

So, masses of people go about enslaved to their desires, constantly searching for something to fill the God-shaped hole in their hearts.

We might think we need a new car or a steak dinner, but what we really need is to draw closer to our Creator.

If that means walking 5 miles to work, but we are walking with God, our most important need is being met.

If that means eating beans and rice, but we eat them with gratitude, our most important need is also being met.

The media loves to tell us what we need, and they are rather pushy about it. Billions of dollars are spent each year marketing products, services, and foods.

As a result, many people are enslaved to their wants and desires. They work to get the newest phone, the best car, and the biggest house.

Commercialism, greed, and excess have consumed the hearts of many, but they only offer a cheap satisfaction, which quickly dissipates leaving us hungry once again.

Seeking out pleasure, fortune, or things, is like only eating junk food all day long. It will sustain you, and maybe even fill you for a brief time, but afterward, you will crash, and feel emptier than before.

God is powerful, and enormous, and loving, and true, therefore only He can fully satisfy the desire of our hearts.

“Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Psalm 37:4 (NIV)

When we accept Christ and Savior, we surrender our desires, and exchange them for God’s plan for our lives.

He places this plan inside each one of our hearts, and through faith and much endurance, the Truth is manifested inside us.
