“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s Will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”Romans 12:2 (NIV)
Conform to the World & Set Yourself up for Destruction
I was quite strange as a child, in fact in high school I was voted most eccentric. Seriously, I’m not kidding.
But, at some point, I grew tired of feeling like I was constantly wadding against the waters of this world. It was as if I was living in a world that was upside down; I could not fit in anywhere.
And so, I gave in and began trying to be like everyone else. I put my faith in the world, and its approval, instead of God and His approval.
Alas, after sometime of living this way (if you could even call it that), I became extremely physically ill, overcome by seizures, ill to the point of death. I never understood the reasoning behind my suffering, but scripture clearly offered an answer.
“To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.”1 Corinthians 5:5 (KJV)
As harsh as this scripture was for me_ this happened because I chased after my desire to become a part of the world. If physical suffering is what it took to draw me to Jesus, I would not go back and change it if, even if I could.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”John 10:10 (NIV)
If you feel like you are hated by the world and have a hard time “fitting in”, please understand that is not a bad thing! The world could never offer us even a tiny percentage of the life God has for us in Christ.
“If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.“John 15:18 (NASB)
But, Jesus did not leave us to suffer alone, He left us His Holy Spirit so that we can have peace amidst adversity.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”John 16:33 (NIV)
The above passage certainly explains some things, specifically why I was hated so much as a child. You may be able to relate to this experience.
How to Walk on Water
The only way we can be the people God has made us to be is if we walk alongside the One who walks on the water, the one who has overcome the world.
When we conform to this world, we are IN the water, but when we conform to the image of Jesus, we walk ON the water.
Summary: Fitting in is not worth ruining your life. Jesus came so that we could have life in abundance. Satan only wants to steal that life away from us. If you are chosen by God, the world will hate you. However, this is because the world hated Jesus. You are a unique creation of God made for a specific purpose. You are loved highly favored.
