3 Ways to get your life back by treating ADHD Naturally

The Backstory

Although I did not suffer from ADHD as a child, I developed adult-onset ADHD after being assaulted with a pistol in 2014. (Girl, that’s a story for another post!)

After a time of prayer, fasting, meditation, exercise, and lots of other stuff, I was able to recover. If you or your child are suffering from ADHD, my heart goes out to you. I know what it is like to feel as if you are living still-shots of your life, disconnected and unable to focus.

There were SO many things, I wanted to do (including write this blog) but was unable to do because of my lack of concentration. Plus, I was in deep financial debt, and could not afford to see a doctor for treatment. 

If you have access to a doctor and can afford to pay one, I highly recommend getting his or her opinion about you or your child’s treatment plan. But, sometimes, God puts us in situations so we can learn to trust Him by doing things differently. The Holy Spirit might push you in a corner, BUUUUUUUUUT, He will give you a way out. 

 I decided to get my life back by treating my ADHD naturally and I know you can do it too! Back then, I was simply trusting God, but this post is backed up with science, if you are a skeptic or just like to learn like me.

In this blog post, I’ll include 3 ways to get your life back by treating ADHD naturally. If you haven’t read “Finally Focused” by James Greenblatt M.D. and Bill Gottlieb CHC, I encourage you to do so. In their book, you’ll find dozens of ways to get your life back and heal from ADHD naturally. 

ADHD Stats

ADHD is a prevalent disorder affecting millions of adults and children worldwide. Unfortunately, the number of people afflicted with ADHD is only on the rise, with cases in children increasing 41% between 2003 and 2011.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is an acronym for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A person suffering from ADHD has difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness regarding task completion, and is easily distracted.

It often manifests in childhood as a neurodevelopmental disorder, but it can present itself later in life due to environmental factors and trauma, such as in my case of a traumatic brain injury. Ouch!

Prescription Treatment

There are two main categories of prescription drugs to treat ADHD.

  • stimulants such as amphetamine (Adderall)
  • nonstimulants such as atomoxetine (Strattera)

Unfortunately, most prescription treatments have nasty side effects. Some side effects of ADHD medications include facial tics, trouble sleeping, crankiness, fatigue, upset stomach, nausea, suicidal thoughts, and more. 

You or your child will likely see a faster improvement with medication, but may suffer from side effects and may experience worsening of other psychiatric problems like depression. Stimulants can cause problems for people with structural heart abnormalities and a history of heart disease. 

Like many things in life, the best way is usually the path less traveled. Jesus is steady trying to make that clear… If you feel you or your child should take medication for ADHD, please do so. However, there are other ways to get your life back and treat ADHD naturally without drugs or possibly in combination with drugs. Without further ado, here’s 3 ways to get your life back by healing ADHD naturally. 

Number 1: Magnesium


According to James Greenblatt M.D., “Magnesium deficiency afflicts 90% of all people with ADHD and triggers symptoms like restlessness, poor focus, irritability, sleep problems,  and anxiety.” Sounds like ADHD, right? Squirrel! 

What Causes Low Magnesium Levels?

As the amount of processed foods in the standard American diet increased, daily magnesium levels began to taper off. The standard American diet is deficient in magnesium, accounting for approximately 50 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of magnesium which is 420 mg daily for males and 320 mg daily for females. 

Other factors that deplete magnesium levels are soda, caffeine, alcohol, and shockingly, ADHD medications. Uh oh…

Natural Sources of Magnesium

Food sources high in magnesium include whole foods like soybeans, tofu, pumpkin seeds, leafy greens, cashews, egg yolks, and brown rice. Magnesium is stripped from foods during processing, so it’s important to eat plenty of whole foods to increase magnesium levels. 

Magnesium is effective in treating ADHD when taken in supplement form, but not all forms of magnesium are absorbed efficiently. Avoid magnesium forms like magnesium oxide and stick with more absorbable forms like magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate. 

For children, and those who have a hard time taking pills (or for big grown man babies), magnesium citrate is available is a powdered form which can be added to water or juice. 

Many people with ADHD have a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep and magnesium taken 30 minutes before bed will help you sleep soundly. 

Tip: Take magnesium along with vitamin D3 and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) to increase the mineral’s bioavailability. 

Number 2: oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OCP's)


OPC’S are a type of plant extract. They are found throughout the plant kingdom in beautiful and vibrant plant pigments_ like the blue in blueberries, the green in green tea, the deep brown in dark chocolate, and the ruby red in grapes. Clearly, OPC’S can also be delicious!


  • improve concentration
  • normalize behavior
  • reduce frustration

OPC’S have a positive on effect brain waves and can help to balance the different types of brain waves. Must be all those good plant vibes. 😏

Individuals with ADHD often have high levels of theta brain waves (linked to daydreaming) and not enough beta brain waves (linked to concentration). The theta waves are like the “creative dreamy hippie” waves, while the beta are the “get er’ done” type waves. When these waves work together and are normalized, focus comes more easily and behavior improves. 

Lastly, OPC’S contain flavanols which reduce free radical oxidation, especially in the brain. In fact, OPC’S are even stronger antioxidants than vitamin C and vitamin E. KA-POW!


OPC’s can be found in plant pigments like the blue in blueberries, the green in green tea, the deep brown in dark chocolate, and the ruby red in grapes. 

You can also supplement with liquid plant extracts like blueberry and green tea. The best source of OPC’S can be found in pine bark extract. 

If you are low on funds, you can make your own pine bark extract or fashion together a home brewed tea out of pine bark and needles. Just be sure you aren’t allergic. If you want to buy some of the stuff below, that would be cool too. 

Number 3: Nutritional Lithium


Yes, if you are familiar with pharmaceutical lithium, you may know it is used to treat individuals with bipolar disorder. But, the doses prescribed to people with BD are in the high dose range, between 600-1800 mg.

  • Emotional balance
  • Improved mood 
  • Tolerance of bad mood when it occurs
  • Decreased impulsivity
  • Increased memory
  • Improvement in cognition


If you or someone you know has ever taken prescription lithium, you know that if levels in the blood get too high, there can be serious side effects. 

Since the dose of supplemental lithium is mush lower, there is usually no need to monitor blood levels and nutritional lithium is considered very safe. Of course, If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor. 

Not to worry though, the levels of lithium in the body produced from supplemental lithium (when taken as directed) mimic natural sources like those in mineral spring or alkaline water. 


To acquire low dose lithium, try lithium water or a liquid lithium supplement. Fair warning though, liquid lithium taste pretty bad, so add it to a juice or sweetened drink. 


I hope you implement some of the ways I mentioned here on how to heal naturally from ADHD. I also hope you choose to take your health and the health of your child into your own hands. I have nothing against modern medicine, but I think that by being overly dependent on allopathic medicine, we as women have lost touch with much of our intuition and innate healing abilities.
