Take the Time to Get to Know Yourself in Christ

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

“The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever”

1 John 2:17 (NIV)

How great it is for us to be made new, whole, living creations in Christ!

But, how sad it is that many of us never take the time to get to know our reborn self.

When I was very young I was humble, then I became arrogant, and upon coming to Christ, I assumed a place of humility once again.

Yet, I was still berating myself for the person I once was and the things I had done, even after sincerely requesting the Lord’s forgiveness.

The qualities I disliked about myself seemed to appear all around me and when I saw them in others, I judged them and was overly critical of them.

“You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Matthew 7:5

When we turn our focus away from Christ, we become envious, unstable and worldly.

The old self rises up again, seeking to conquer our consciousness and revert us to our foregoing ways.

But, we will not overcome that prior self by hating her. No, we will only prevail over her by loving her.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Note, I do not say that we should love the sins she amassed and the hatred she practiced, but I do say we should love her, in spite of her flaws.

This is the love our Lord Jesus Christ has shown us. The love of God is not dependent on anything we have done. For His love is merciful, and true, and holy.

Set aside time to get to know yourself in the Lord. Learn your likes and dislikes, study your strengths and weaknesses, but above all love yourself.

Let God establish you in the Truth, and strengthen you in love, so that you may become a vessel of the love of Christ.
